On the road South - Cairns to the Fraser Coast!

After 2 months in Far North Queensland it was time to continue our journey, we were both excited to get back on the road.  After a wonderful 6 days with Ann-Marie and Peter we packed up the van and headed off!  Seeya Cairns and FNQ, we will miss the mountains, the vibe and our people!!

Bilyana free rest area, via our fab FNQ lookout (Rex Lookout) and Tully was our first stop (unfortunately a little close to the road), once we set up and had a bit of lunch we headed to Murray Falls, wow this place was so beautiful!!  The falls were amazing as was the beautiful swimming hole!  There were some people there doing extreme rock sliding down into the rock pool.

The next day we travelled to Ingham and checked out the Tyto Wetlands, Townsville (with a walk along the Strand, and our final destination was Home Hill Comfort Stop which was right in town, right next to the rail line.... not a great idea in hindsight!  We did a quick drive back to Ayr for a look see.  OMG I have never seen so many freight trains in my life!!  Not a lot of sleep happened that night!

Next day our destination was Airlie Beach with a stop at Bowen on the way.  We parked the van at the boat ramp at Bowen and decided to spend the next 3 hours wasting our lives trying to catch fish, as usual these days no luck, well except for this weird looking sucker fish!!  We planned to spend a couple of days in Airlie Beach.  They have a fantastic boardwalk which we walked and then we rode it as well, swimming was also a must as it was rather hot!  We also managed to catch up with my friend Sue - so good to see her!!

Clairview was a nice free camp on our way to Emu Park near Yeppoon. We loved the Yeppoon area, we stayed at Emu Park but drove up and down the coast and checked out the whole area.  We definitely would like to come back here!  We were lucky enough to watch turtles playing around just near the rocks at Roslyn Bay!

It was so cheap to catch a boat out to Great Keppel Island, so we thought we'd give it a go! We packed up our lunch and swimming / snorkelling gear and headed off!!  They just drop you off on the sand, no jetty and then you just walk to where you want to base yourself. We had an amazing day, it was very hot so the swimming was fantastic and we did a nice walk too! The snorkelling wasn't that great and there were a few jelly fish in the water, we did see some starfish though!

We continued on our journey south, stopping at Boyne River and had a fish, the town of 1770, Bundaberg (we just had to do the Bundy Tour) and Apple Tree Creek, all great spots!!  It was getting so hot, we were very happy that we decided not to take the inland route!

Our next destination was Inskip Point quite close to Rainbow Beach and right opposite Fraser Island, we'd heard that it was supposed to be amazing..... we'd heard correctly!  We decided to stay for 3 days, we managed to haul the van through the sand and get ourselves a lovely spot!  We enjoyed our time by fishing, walking and visiting Rainbow Beach, great spot!

Stay tuned for the next episode.... hope you enjoyed our update!
